Waukesha Civic Theater stages a contemporary production of a classic 1972 holiday story with Barbara Robinson’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (through Dec. 16).
Talented, young Caitlin Rosencrantz plays the story’s narrator, Beth Bradley—a schoolgirl whose mother has been given the opportunity to direct the annual church Christmas pageant for the first time ever. Things get hopelessly out of control as the Herdmans (a family of school bullies) end up in all the major roles. Little bits of contemporary technology make for interesting updates. At one point two girls are seen text messaging each other rumors about the Herdmans. Beth’s brother Charlie talks to his parents without prying any attention away from a home video game he’s playing. Director Karin Cunningham puts together a cute production with a huge cast in a story that comes across considerably less preachy than it could have.
